Did you know that Monstera plants are also called window leaves? This is because Monstera's leaves are slit, giving the impression of windows in the leaves. The Monstera plants belong to the aroid family, of which we also have some native representatives in Germany! The Monstera group includes about 50 species, but only a small fraction of them do well with the climate of your room. We have summarized the 10 most beautiful Monstera variants for you:
1. Monstera deliciosa- The delicious one
This beautiful Monstera plant is probably the best known and also the most frequently sold. When buying, you should not be disappointed if the leaves are not yet split, as this only develops with age. Monstera plants can grow very old and large. The leaves of this Monstera variant have a particularly beautiful rich green and their leaves are impressively large, which is why this variety is particularly popular.
2. Monstera deliciosa variegata- The spotted one
This variant of the Monstera deliciosa does not simply have lush green leaves, but is downright mottled. As with pied animals, this is due to the fact that parts of the leaf do not contain any chlorophyll, i.e. no plant pigment. Your Monstera plant will never stay the same, because the proportions of green and white color components in the leaf fluctuate and change constantly, completely white leaves can also occur.
3. Monstera deliciosa marmorata- The marbled one
Similar to the Monstera deliciosa variegata, this Monstera variant also forms white spots on the leaves, but these appear more marbled and are not white but rather yellowish. This variant is beautiful, very rare and therefore more expensive than the Monstera deliciosa.
4. Monstera deliciosa Borsigiana- Climbing Marble Monstera
If you want something extra in addition to the strikingly patterned leaves, then the Borsigiana variant is recommended. While this monstera doesn't grow impressively large leaves, it can climb and twine, making it a great botanical decoration for your bookshelf.
5. Monstera deliciosa "Thai Constellation" - Monstera Princess
This monstera is often mistaken for an albino monstera, since completely white leaves can also occur. However, it does not have pure white leaves, but rather yellowish to cream-colored foliage. It has significantly smaller leaves and is also called Monstera "Salt and Pepper" because of the distribution of its coloration. A very special colored specimen of this plant can be extremely expensive.
6. Monstera deliciosa Alba variegata- Queen of Monstera
Due to the pure white coloring of the leaves, this plant can be outrageously expensive, which is why it is also one of the most expensive varieties. Unlike the "Thai Constellation" variant, the leaves are pure white.
7. Monstera adansonii- The masked monstera
In contrast to the Monstera deliciosa, this Monstera variant does not have slit leaves but perforated ones, which makes its leaves look like a mask. If you don't have that much space available, you're well served with this Monstera, because it doesn't get quite as big. If the plant is too shady, the leaves do not get holes and remain small and without holes. In general, the Monstera plant is content with shady places and prefers the penumbra.
8. Monstera obliqua- Edible monstera
This is a monstera with dominant monstera and edible fruits that taste like pineapple. Monstera plants rarely flower, but fruit can form when they flower. The inflorescence resembles that of the Aron staff. However, the formation of flowers and fruits is very rare in Monstera indoor plants and only succeeds with optimal care! You should be careful when the ground is cold, because the Monstera doesn't like that at all. It is best to place them in a raised position in a place that is as consistently warm as possible and where there is no draft.
9. Monstera accuminata- The climbing monstera
Unlike the other Monstera variants, the leaves of this Monstera plant don't get quite as big, but it grows all the faster and starts to climb. With the right climbing aid, it can conquer the whole room in a short time. To keep your Monstera in good shape, it should be pruned back from time to time. If at some point it gets too big for you, you can give offshoots of your Monstera to friends. They reproduce vegetatively via cuttings. Watch out in winter: The Monstera doesn't like dry heating air.
10. Monstera karstenianum- The ones without holes
Monstera don't always have to be perforated or windowed. There are also variants that do not have this special feature! This variety climbs strongly, but does not necessarily need a climbing aid, because it can also grow well downwards. The leaves appear as if they have blisters because, unlike the other variants, the surface is not entirely smooth. The light green spots on the leaves are also pretty. However, the leaves do not have a contrasting colored border.
