There are many different types of ferns, for planting in the garden and as houseplants in pots. The sword fern (Nephrolepis exaltata) is often kept as a houseplant and belongs to the family of the same name; Sword Ferns (Nephrolepidaceae). It resembles the typical image of the fern as a herbaceous plant with frond-like and pinnate leaves. The nest fern (Aspenium nidus) belongs to the spleenwort family (Aspleniaceae) and has undivided leaves. The maidenhair fern (Adiantum raddianum) is part of the tree fern family (Pteridaceae) with its small leaves on which water runs off. Ferns produce spores instead of flowers. They need moist, humus-rich soil, like partial shade to shade and are considered easy to care for. They are toxic to humans and pets.
